Flooding is a common, naturally occurring event in BC. Although flooding can occur at any time of year, the most severe floods typically occur in the spring from the influences of heavy rain, combined with the snowmelt runoff. The resulting surge of water can happen anytime between April and July and is known as a freshet. There is a greater risk of significant flooding in this circumstance; however, weather conditions will determine the severity. Provincial flood experts continually monitor river and stream levels and relay this information to local governments, who in turn advise their residents.
