In the last year many more lives than usual were saved because of the growing support of the Organ donor program through B.C. Transplant. Last year set a record for live-saving organ donations and the rate of deceased donors has doubled in the last six years. Despite it being a record year for organ donations there is still a need for more people to join the program. There are still over 500 people on the waiting list waiting for organs in British Columbia alone.
To gain more support for the Organ Donor program B.C. Transplant have partnered up with ICBC to launch a pilot program to encourage customers at ICBC offices to register for the program. ICBC hopes it can help get the number of registered people in BC up from 20 percent by either answering yes or no to wanting to be an organ donor. The program will only be at a few locations to begin with, then will be re-evaluated to create a long term plan.
