Travel Insurance Provides Affordable Protection

It is very important to but Travel Medical Insurance when visiting a foreign country. Anything could go wrong when visiting a country and even something minor could cost a person a lot of money.

Recently a 40 year old man from British Columbia travelled to Thailand to reconcile with his father after fifteen years. He is now left with a bill of $170,000 to pay to a hospital in Thailand after he was struck by a dump truck while riding a scooter in Phuket. He was found almost dead and brought directly to the hospital with injuries including broken ribs, punctured lungs, torn muscles and internal bleeding. The man made a “miraculous” recovery though, but it has set his wallet back a long way. Instead of paying two or three dollars a day for a travel medical insurance policy, he shelled out thousands just to make it through is trip.

The Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada offered the following tips for travelers to make sure they are properly insured:

  1. Understand your travel insurance policy: Insurance providers have staff available to answer any questions related to policies.
  2. Know your health and consult a health care provider if you have any questions.
  3. Know your trip: How long will you be gone? Are you a snowbird? Will you be travelling many times during the year? Do you plan to scuba dive? Some policies will be more suitable for you than others.

Many people who go travelling believe that it isn’t going to happen to them, or that they will be careful so they won’t need travel insurance; but it really is an inexpensive part of your trip of a lifetime and it could save your wallet in the long run.
